Essential Oils in Your Skincare Routine

We’re all striving for that perfect glowing skin – moisturised and clear. Did you know that essential oils can help you achieve just that? Essential oils are an all-natural alternative to commercial products which can contain synthetics. Most essential oils have antiseptic properties to a degree, while some are antibacterial. Some essential oils are anti-inflammatory and can soothe and calm the skin.

Cleansing oils
Cleansing oils are used to remove pollutants and makeup while keeping your skin balanced and moisturised. Where commercial cleansing products can often strip your skin of natural oils, cleansing oils retain this balance. Rather than having multiple products in your routine, this oil cleansing method can simplify your skin care regimen and leave you with youthful and healthy skin. The added beauty about making your own cleansing oil is that you can alter the ingredients to suit your skin type and needs.

Our organic jojoba oil and coconut oil are great for this purpose! Jojoba oil particularly is good for oily or acne-prone skin while coconut oil is better suited for dry and sensitive skin. Essential oils can also be added to target specific symptoms, as long as it is diluted safely. After washing your hands, simply place 1 to 2 teaspoons of oil into the palm of your hand and apply to your face, massaging it into your skin with circular motions. This part will take a few minutes in order to remove impurities and cleanse properly. Use a damp, warm washcloth to gently remove the oil without irritating your skin. Pat dry with a towel and moisturise if needed.

Tea tree
Tea tree oil is well known for its skin care benefits and has been found to be effective in treating acne in several studies. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties and can help improve redness and swelling while reducing irritation. Tea tree oil is also used to combat dandruff and scalp issues. A drop of tea tree oil can be added to a carrier oil or moisturiser and applied topically to affected areas.

Geranium oil evens out skin texture by healing blemishes and brightening your overall complexion. The oil is also known for its anti-aging effects such as reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on mature skin. Geranium oil can be easily incorporated into your skincare routine by adding a drop or two to your skin and hair care products.

As well as being antiseptic, peppermint oil helps to minimise the appearance of pores and tighten the skin for a more youthful appearance. Furthermore, the cooling effect of peppermint can help to reduce redness, irritation and inflammation. Dilute peppermint oil in your choice of carrier oil before applying topically.

Lavender is an amazingly versatile oil, so it should come as no surprise that it does wonders for your skin. Due to its antibacterial properties, lavender oil is cleansing and will reduce inflammation and prevent acne. Lavender can also stimulate tissue repairing processes leading to faster wound healing and reducing the appearance of scars. Add a few drops of lavender oil to a bowl of boiling water, stir, and lean over the bowl with a towel wrapped around your head for a facial steaming session. Steam for 5-10 minutes to unclog your pores and achieve a deeper cleanse.
