Essential oils are potent plant extracts. Made up of various chemical compounds, essential oils have a range of therapeutic benefits. Essential oils are commonly used in diffusers, skin care and room fresheners. However, they are highly concentrated and need to be used with caution especially when applied topically.

At Acacia Aromatherapy, we DO NOT recommend ingesting essential oils. We also DO NOT recommend applying oils onto the skin undiluted. Consult a health care professional before using essential oils with children, pregnant women, and pets.

Essential oils are all very different in chemical composition and have very different effects. Thus, you should research the possible side effects of each oil before use.

Dilution ratios differ depending on the person. As children have more sensitive skin, dilution ratios are lower in order to be applied safely.

Some citric essential oils can cause phototoxicity if applied to the skin before sun exposure. Please read the product guidelines, usually located on the sticker label of the bottle, before use.

Some individuals may have a particular sensitivity of allergy to an essential oil. Conduct a patch test prior to a full application of the chosen essential oil/s. After washing and drying your arm, apply a few drops of diluted essential oil onto your inner forearm. Place a bandage over the area and keep dry for 24 hours. If signs of irritation occur during the 24 hours, remove the bandage and wash your arm thoroughly. If no signs of irritation occur, it is likely safe for you to use the essential oil topically.

When diffusing essential oils, make sure you are in a well-ventilated room. If you have pets in the house, make sure they can move freely out of the room.

As a general guideline, essential oils should be stored in a cool dark place, out of direct sunlight. Do not transfer the oils to other containers after purchase. Essential oils should be kept out of reach of children or pets and be put away immediately after use. As essential oils are highly flammable, ensure they are kept away from open flames.
