How To Use Essential Oils

Essential oils can be a life changing discovery with their many properties and uses. From antimicrobial properties, to stress relief and energising effects, the harnessed potential of nature can completely overhaul your lifestyle for the better.

If you’re just starting out your natural wellness journey with essential oils, we realise that the many ways to experience the powerful benefits of oils may be overwhelming. If you’re well acquainted with essential oils already, you may find one or two methods you haven’t tried quite yet.

Incorporating essential oils into your daily life is easier than it might seem.

Here are our favourite ways to use essential oils:

Diffusing
Using a diffuser device is a safe and easy way to enjoy the effects of essential oils. Ultrasonic diffusers disperse a fine mist of essential oil molecules into the air, through a vibration of water. The healing aroma of the essential oils will fill the room. Check the instructions specific to your diffuser product for water and oil ratios. If you’re looking for an added perk to your diffuser, our Bella, Coral, Iris, Jolie and Neptune models have an LED light function, making your aromatherapy experience just that little more special and personal. Try diffusing our Rejuvenate Blend for a mental boost when you’re working or studying from home.

Spray
A quick and effective way to enjoy aromatherapy on the go is to use a spray bottle. Add 5 to 10 drops of essential oils to the bottle with 100mL of water. Shake the bottle vigorously before each use. This method can be used to remove odour from a room or enhance the mood. This room spray is recommended to be used up within a week. Alternatively, use our ready-made aromatic room mists such as Blissful Moment to balance emotions and revitalise your soul.

Direct Method
Take care when applying essential oils to your skin. Most essential oils must be diluted by a carrier / vegetable oil (e.g. coconut oil, jojoba oil) at no greater concentration than 3-5% before being applied topically. One teaspoon of carrier substance is to be diluted by 3 drops of pure essential oil for topical application. Diluted essential oils can be applied to your temples, neck and behind the ears. Dab a little Peppermint to reduce stress and uplift the mind.

Massage
Aromatherapy massages are therapeutic and engage with both physical touch and olfactory senses. Essential oils for massage should be diluted with a carrier oil at a 1% to 3% solution. In other words, 100mL of carrier oil is to be diluted by 1 to 3 mL of essential oils.

Bath
Adding 3-8 drops of essential oils to bath water is an effective way to relax the body and mind. The benefits are absorbed through the skin as well as through the respiratory system. The use of bath salts, carrier oil or milk is recommended in order to properly disperse the essential oils into water. Agitate the surface of the bath prior to immersing your body. Note: avoid using herbaceous essential oils and some citrus essential oils which may irritate the skin. We recommend using Lavender if you’re looking to fully relax and soothe the mind and body.

Pillows
To assist with sleeping problems and breathing, place 1-3 drops of essential oils on the corner or underside of your pillow. Take care to place the essential oils in an area away from your face, especially the eyes. Try our specially formulated Peaceful Dreams blend before bed to optimise your sleep quality.
